From the U.S. Naval Historical Center, Washington D.C., USA Dr. William Dudley, Director of the U.S. Naval Historical Center, Washington D.C. would like to announce the recipients of his institution's naval history fellowships for the 2002-2003 academic year. Mr. Howard Fuller, a doctoral candidate at King's College, University of London has received the Rear Admiral Hayes Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. This $10,000 award will permit Mr. Fuller to complete his dissertation entitled, "Clad in Iron: Assessing the Comparative Strategic and Tactical Strengths of the British and Union Ironclad Programs of the Civil War Era." Dr. Angus Goldberg, a scholar on the faculty of the Scottish Institute of Maritime Studies at the University of St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland has received the Rear Admiral Hooper Fellowship in the amount of $2,500 to further his current book project tentatively entitled, The Political World of the United States Navy Officer Corps, 1828-1858. Mr. Thomas P. Lowery, an independent scholar, also received a Rear Admiral Hooper Fellowship in the amount of $2,000 to permit him to complete his computer database of over 75,000 Union courts martial during the Civil War. Scholars of American naval history have employed similar projects already completed by Mr. Lowery to advance their scholarly efforts.
