Between the 1950s and the 1970s, The LOG transformed from a news
and entertainment magazine for midshipmen into a more humor-oriented
publication that increasingly resembled Playboy magazine, which
itself gained in popularity during the 1950s; see David Halberstam, The
Fifties (New York City, NY: Villard, 1993), 569–576. Images of
women in The LOG appeared as early as 1923, but it was not until
1958 that sexually suggestive drawings of women debuted; see: Cover. LOG,
Vol. 14, No. 23, 19 March 1923; Centerfold, LOG, Vol. 47, No. 13,
4 Apr. 1958, 16–17; “Guided Tour,” LOG, Vol. 47, No. 17, 30
May 1958, 14–15. LOG covers featuring photographs of women
began in 1959, and by 1963, LOG features began to include overt
references to sex; see: Cover, LOG, Vol. 49, No. 7, 18 Dec. 1959;
Cover, LOG, Vol. 49, No. 14, 15 Apr. 1960; “We Do Have Our
Tradition!”, LOG, Vol. 53, No. 1, 27 Sep. 1963, 28; Photo
“Hey Dad, come see what sis and her boyfriend are doing,” LOG,
Vol. 53, No. 10, 18. By 1970, provocative photos of women on
midshipmen’s beds appeared and LOG editors deliberately copied
the format and open, invigorated style, though not the nude content, of Playboy;
see Photographs of Julie Biggs, LOG, Vol. 59, No. 7, 13 Mar.
1970, 27–30; “Worth 10,000 Words,” LOG, Vol. 59, No. 7, 13
Mar. 1970, 37; Back cover, LOG, Vol. 55, No. 10, 25 Feb. 1966;
“Drag of the Week,” LOG, Vol. 57, No. 12, 5 Apr. 1968,
14–15; Playboy-spoof issue, LOG, Vol. 58, No. 14, 18
Apr. 1969; Cover, LOG, Vol. 59, No. 4, 19 Dec. 1969. The
popularity of Playboy among the midshipmen may be reflected in
the USNA administrative decision to prohibit the midshipmen from hanging
“pin-ups” of women in the hallways of Bancroft Hall, in 1969; see
Mark Gardner, “The Bare Bosoms of Mahon (sic) Hall,” LOG,
Vol. 59, No. 2, 17 Oct. 1969, 14. Changing USNA regulations may,
likewise, reflect an increase in sexual activity at USNA by 1969, when
administrators codified the policy that “midshipmen will not loiter in
the cemetery with young ladies”; see Changes 9 to USNA Regulations
1964, Part II, 21 Aug. 1969, SR2 Sec. 5215/2, Folder “Naval Academy
Regulations, 1 Jan. 1974.” Such sentiments on women as sexual objects
can also be seen in the Naval Academy’s yearbook, The Lucky Bag.
The 1970 Lucky Bag, for example, contains a photograph of six
midshipmen with their hands on the buttocks of a woman wearing a skirt;
see 1970 Lucky Bag, 382.
