The Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial:

Three-Day Naval & Military History Symposium

     The Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial will hold a three-day Naval & Military History Symposium that will include presentations by various speakers on different aspects of American naval history, meals, and tours of the USS New Jersey, the most decorated battleship in the history of the U.S. Navy. Presentations will also be made at Independence Seaport Museum after which one may tour of the world's oldest cruiser, the 1892-vintage,  Spanish-American War veteran Olympia.

Speakers:

Paul Stillwell, Director, History Division, United States Naval Institute will present 'History of USS NJ (BB-62)'

Dr. Thomas Banit, Education Department and Dr. Thomas Walsh, Instruction and Educational Leadership Dept., Kean University will present 'Battleship New Jersey: A Cross-Curriculum Educational Experience'

Edward Marolda, Senior Historian, U.S. Naval Historical Center will discuss 'Naval Bombardment in Korea and Vietnam.'

Dr. Benjamin Franklin Cooling, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, will speak on the 'History of the Cruiser Olympia, 1892-2000'

Joseph James Ahern, American Philosophical Society Library, will address the "History of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard."

 Lockheed Martin will offer a presentation on Maritime Technologies, Aegis and Homeland Security Technology.

Friday, June 13 (registration begins at 3 pm) through Sunday, June 15, 2003.

Details:

Registration for the three-day symposium is $210 for guests, $190 for educators, and includes all meals, and bus services to and from the battleship, as well as a ferry ride to Independence Seaport Museum and Cruiser Olympia. It is open to the public, and teachers can earn up to 15 State of NJ Continuing Education Credits, with special one day attendance rates. The Battleship New Jersey has reserved rooms at the Clarion Hotel in Cherry Hill, NJ, for a discounted price of $74 per night.

The Battleship New Jersey Memorial and Museum is open to the public seven days a week from 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. Admission for adults is $12.50, children ages 6 to 11 are $8, and senior citizens and veterans with ID is $8. There is no charge for children under 6 years of age, active military in uniform or former crewmembers with ID. For more information about group
